Before You Travel – InciWeb – The Incident Information System

With the west in a historical drought, the warnings of a major wildfire season have already come to fruition.  Because of this, travelers should plan ahead and check their routes and destinations, in case of closures, or rerouting.  Thankfully, for campers, travelers and residents of these areas, the Federal Government has a website that compiles incident information from around the United States in one location, for all types of incidents that affect everyone.

InciWeb – The Incident Information System:

Website URL:  http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/

The information compiled on the InciWeb site includes information from the following departments/agencies:

  • U.S. Forest Service
  • Bureau of Land Management
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs
  • Fish & Wildlife Service
  • National Park Service
  • National Association of State Foresters
  • U.S. Fire Administration
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group.

With all these departments and agencies supplying information to the site, you can investigate detailed, real-time information that may affect your camping and travel plans.

The InciWeb site allows you to search by incident, state, time period, incident age and current status.  Along with the information, they typically include maps that show what specific areas have closures, as well as what areas are affected by the event.  The listings show you when the last update happened, so you know if you are looking at information that is fresh and pertinent (see example below).

If you have an RSS news feed reader, you can also feed the real-time information to your reader.  The information can also provide a Google Earth feed as well.

Be safe in your travels, have fun camping in your Casita Trailers, but please be aware of what is happening on your route and at your destinations.
